A Downing College 4+ rowed in the Collegiate Fours Division
at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday, placing 9th out of 41 crews. In
the boat were Robert Clarke, Olli Lupton, Jamie Logie and Craig Sawyer, with
Sarah Smart in the Cox's seat. We had a good row, dealing well with ferocious
winds and a cox box that gave out as we crossed the start line. Building on the
fine lines taken by Sarah around the bends and spurred on by enthusiastic
spectators we were able to hit a good rate, going over the course at a solid 32
strokes per minute. As we came up on crews in front we made effective moves to
overtake, even without Sarah shouting us on. The race felt solid and we held
our form well towards the end of the 3 mile course to finish with a time of
18:24. Our time was well within 5% of the winning time, giving us a guaranteed
starting position in next year's race.
This is the kind of result we were hoping for
and it is great to see that we were able to build on the lessons of last year's
trip.
